WFTC Genoa Institute 2010
The future of TC in the Changing World
THE STRUCTURE OF THE INSTITUTE
This Institute will be totally different from the biannual WFTC conferences.
The common complaint after these conferences was that there was not enough time for discussion.
In this Institute there will be no formal presentations and ample opportunities to share experiences and ideas in discussion groups.
Participants are all on invitation only. They are invited for their knowledge of therapeutic communities. A number of relative outsiders are invited, experts from outside the world of therapeutic communities, to share with the other participants their views on the treatment of addicted persons and the role therapeutic communities have in and possibly also outside this field.
The participants will be divided into five working groups to discuss the topics of the day.
At registration they receive the list of the participants of their group.
The language in the discussion groups is English. For those who do not speak English there are groups in Spanish and Italian.
Each group has a facilitator. There are five facilitators. They are: Sushma Taylor, Albert Sabates, Andrea Ascari, David Turner and Georges van der Straten.
Each group chooses a reporter who presents the results of the discussions in the group in the next plenary session. In the plenary session there is simultaneous translation English - Italian.-Spanish.
In the plenary sessions there will be a short introduction of the three questions the groups will discuss.
On the first day the topic is how the changes in the environment have influenced the therapeutic communities. The drugs have changed, also the concept of addiction
The main question for the working groups to discuss is:
Did the populations of the residents entering TC's change and if so: why and what are the consequences?
On the second day the topic is:
There have been changed in the therapeutic communities? Do they change from a self help program into a medical model institution? What has changed, what remained unchanged, what was abandoned, what was added?
The main question for the working group to discuss is:
What has changed in the therapeutic community of to-day and why?
On the third day the topic is the welfare system and its influence on therapeutic communities and the equilibrium between the social and the health care part of in our TC models. What can we import into our programs?
The main question for the working group to discuss is:
How can developments in the society improve the work in TC's and can the TC method help to improve the work in other fields?
